Welcome to the World of the RC Car
Unlike many other hobbies, building and racing radio controlled cars and trucks is a hobby that the entire family can join in on. There are miniature RC cars and toy RC cars that are perfect for the younger kids, and electric and gas powered RC cars that are perfect for the older kids and the adults.
There are many facets to the radio controlled car, but what makes the vehicle radio controlled is of course the radio. Those who purchase a ready to run, or RTR, vehicle will have the radio included in the box, while those who purchase a build kit or ARTR (almost ready to run) vehicle will generally need to purchase their own radio to complete the vehicle.
The radio system of the radio controlled car or truck actually consists of three distinct parts, and it is important to know what each part does. The three parts that make up the radio system include the transmitter, the receiver and the servo.
The transmitter is what the driver holds in his or her hand, and the job of the transmitter is to send signals to the receiver. This receiver is built into the body of the car or truck. The receiver then sends signals to the servo, and this servo has the job of controlling the steering and acceleration of the car or truck.
The top speeds of radio controlled cars and trucks vary quite a bit, from low powered vehicles that travel at low speeds to super charged nitro powered radio controlled cars that have top speeds of greater than 70 miles per hour.
